šŸ“Š Women in Dataviz 2022 Q4 Update

Although we communicate regularly on Slack, it can be easy to miss messages in a continuous feed of information. We want to provide the occasional ā€œofficialā€ communication to ensure that important announcements and updates reach you, so youā€™ll receive this just once per quarter. (You can opt out, of course!)

šŸš€ Mission statement

Women in Dataviz is a community of women and individuals who have felt othered based on their gender identity or gender expression who are passionate about data visualization. We welcome professional practitioners, students, and enthusiasts at all stages of life and career. We aim to surround our members with a supportive network of peers, mentors, and friends who see and value them for who they are, with the ultimate goal of increasing gender diversity and equity in technology and the world.

Many thanks to Elisa Davis for helping to ensure that the language of our mission statement is as inclusive as we wanted it to be. If you have feedback on how we can further improve it, please send it along to [email protected].

šŸŒ± Community growth

Since we migrated from Discord to Slack in October, weā€™ve seen significant growth. Thank you for being here and adding your particular combination of skills, interests, and personality to the collective. Iā€™m especially encouraged by the international diversity! Over the past several weeks, we have welcomed members from the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Australia, the U.K., and all over the U.S.

ā˜•ļøVirtual Coffee Breaksā˜•ļø

I'm pleased to report that our November Virtual Coffee Break was free of technical difficulties with our new videoconferencing platform, Eventzilla, and so much fun!Ā

The next one is on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 8 a.m. EST. These meetings are intended to be super-low-key, informal, and absolutely zero pressure. The virtual meeting room remains open for an hour (8:00-9:00 a.m. EST), but don't feel obligated to stay for the whole time--drop in for as much or as little time as you want. Following this first meeting of the new year, I've scheduled one for every 6th Thursday morning at 8 a.m. EST. (The exact dates for all 2023 meetings scheduled so far are on the Community Calendar.)

I know EST is not great for everyone, and we haveĀ members in several time zones around the world, so I am looking for one or more community members different time zones to host Virtual Coffee Breaks periodically. (They don't need to be every six weeks.) Please DM me on Slack or email [email protected] if youā€™re interested in helping out, even if itā€™s just for one event. My hope is that at some point in the not-too-distant future, our community can serve members equally well in all time zones.

šŸ—£ Conversations with Women in Dataviz

I'm super excited about our new series of talks, Conversations with Women in Dataviz.Ā This series of talks is intended to give a platform to women to speak about topics in data visualization, especially as they pertain to women, and to be an interactive forum for the exchange of ideas. The first one is onĀ Thursday, December 1, 2022, 8:00-9:15 p.m. EST, and is titled The Art & Etiquette of Communicating and Receiving Data Visualization Feedback. Michelle Frayman and Nicole Klassen of Viz Office Hours and The Feedback Loop will be presenting, but we intentionally built in time for this to be a conversation, so bring your questions and ideas. Learn more here. Many of you have already registered, but if you want to attend and haven't yet, please visit this link.Ā

All of our upcoming events are on the Community Calendar. If you'd like to submit an event to the calendar, please fill out this short form.

šŸ“‰ Inspiring tv show-themed vizzes from the community!
